The startup has just raised $43 million in a pre-Series A round led by the Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) arm of BV bank.
The round also counted on investors who had already signed the check in the previous funding round - a R$ 11 million seed money, announced a year ago. Invisto Capital and the Heilberg brothers, founding partners of HIX Capital, followed suit. The round also brought to the captive Álvaro Augusto de Freitas Vidigal, 'Guti', founder and CEO of brokerage Singulare (formerly Socopa).
"This new contribution gives us an important runway, besides allowing us to invest even more in our technology, customer experience and talent attraction," says Carlos Alberto Souza Barros, cofounder of Darwin Seguros, in a statement.
The entrepreneur explains that the conversation with BV began as an insurance distribution partnership and "quickly" evolved into investment. "With BV, Darwin Seguros gains access to a base of 4.7 million active customers, one of the largest brokerages in the country, more than 20,000 tenants and a lot of know-how in the industry."
The round comes at a time when the insurtech is preparing to make its market debut. In August, Darwin will launch its first product, a car insurance product that will use a telemetry system on the insured's cell phone to evaluate his driving profile, his lifestyle, and thus price the insurance according to the risk generated by the driver.
The journey will be 100% digital, from the quote to the payment of compensation. In the note, the startup says it does not believe in the standard "average price" system used by the market.
Two weeks ago, Darwin was approved by Susep to become a digital insurer within the second edition of the regulatory sandbox, just as occurred with Pier, a participant in the first edition of the experimental environment, which last month received the definitive license from the regulator.
"With our distribution, reinsurance and other business partnerships, we plan to start applying for the definitive license by the end of 2023," comments Firmino Freitas, co-founder of Darwin Insurance, in the note.
For BV Bank, one of the leading banks in auto financing, the partnership is promising. "Our ambition is to provide customers with complete solutions related to the automotive ecosystem," says Daniel Monteiro, director of insurance at BV bank. "Darwin fits perfectly into that."
