The fintech Neon Payments closed the purchase of Magliano Invest, the oldest securities broker in the Brazilian market, owner of number 001 in B3. The transaction amount, which has yet to be approved by regulatory bodies, has not been released. Neon will now offer its digital account customers the option to also make investments within the same platform.
“We were pioneers in the digital transformation of products and services related to the current account. Now we want to take this digitalization experience to the investment world, ”said Jean Sigrist, president of Neon, noting that the acquisition was closed yesterday, the day that fintech completed four years.
Neon bought the broker as it is today: it will incorporate its team of professionals, control systems and processes into its business. "This will represent an important timing gain, since we are not going into the business from scratch," says Sigrist.
In 2018, Magliano had already transferred its retail customer portfolio to Guide. In 2019, without making any disclosure to the market, Guide also bought the fund management and custody area.
Magliano will change its name to Neon and, in a way, will return to serve retail, but only fintech customers.
After the sale of 100% of the broker, Raymundo Magliano Filho, former president of the former Bovespa, says that the family will follow other paths. “In this pandemic, when nobody knows tomorrow, we will stop to think about how we should act from now on in the market”, says Magliano Filho, who tends to dedicate himself more to the study of philosophy and works with social impact than to the market. The broker was born in 1972 and was already in the third generation - Raymundo Magliano Neto will not join the new house.
“It will be very nice to say that Neon is the number 001 broker on the stock exchange. Magliano's management at Bovespa has always been innovative. He was a visionary, with a series of initiatives to attract the retail investor. Now we will continue this work from many years ago, ”said Sigrist.
Magliano Filho says that contact with new businesses in the market is a mutual learning process. “They have the technology and we have a tradition of having worked in the market for so many years. Both are of great value, ”he says. Neon already had an investment area, which will integrate with the Magliano team, and an asset with two funds that are being distributed. After the deal is approved, it will be able to offer its clients access to all types of capital market products. Today it has 9 million open accounts, including individuals and companies.
Today, Neon distributes CDBs from Banco Votorantim, and Sigrist notes that the portfolio of clients that already invest with fintech, surprisingly, has grown about 20% per month since the beginning of the pandemic, in March. At the moment, 30% of the base already consumes this investment product offered.
“As we have a more complete product offering, penetration tends to grow. More than that, we see the connection between credit, account and investment, with greater agility between operations ”, says Sigrist. As an example, a customer who has an investment in Neon tends to get a better credit score than one who doesn't. There will also be more agility in eventual investment redemptions.
