Apple announced today that businesses in Brazil can now accept in-person tap payments using Tap to Pay on the iPhone. The new feature will allow millions of merchants, from small businesses to large retailers, to accept Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards1 and other digital wallets securely and easily using just their iPhone and the partner's iOS app, without the need for additional payment equipment or terminals.
Tap to Pay on the iPhone is available for payment platforms and app developers in Brazil to integrate it into their iOS apps and offer the payment option to their business customers. CloudWalk now offers Tap to Pay on iPhone to its Brazilian business customers, and other payment platforms, including Granito, Nubank, Stone and SumUp, will be available soon.
"Tap to Pay on iPhone has helped businesses around the world of all sizes - from freelancers to large retailers - offer new payment experiences, and we're excited to bring an easy, secure and private payment solution to Brazilian merchants," said Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. "Brazil is a very entrepreneurial nation, and now businesses will have the ability to accept tap payments at all of their locations."
With Tap to Pay on the iPhone, merchants can accept proximity payments via an app on the iPhone XS or later with the latest version of iOS. When finalising the payment, the merchant just needs to ask the customer to bring their iPhone or Apple Watch closer to the merchant's iPhone to pay with Apple Pay, a debit or credit card by tapping or another digital wallet, and the payment will be made securely using NFC2 technology.
No additional equipment is required to accept tap payments with Tap to Pay on the iPhone.
Privacy is fundamental to the design and development of all Apple's payment features. With Tap to Pay on the iPhone, customer payment data is protected by the same technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure. All transactions using Tap to Pay on the iPhone are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element and, as is already the case with Apple Pay, Apple doesn't know what is being purchased or by whom.
Apple is collaborating with the main payment platforms and app developers in the payments and commerce sector to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone in Brazil. Tap to Pay on iPhone complements and enhances the robust suite of payment and commerce tools that payment platforms and app developers offer their business customers to help them manage and grow their businesses. Tap to Pay on the iPhone will work with proximity debit and credit cards from the main payment networks, including American Express, Mastercard and Visa.
"With Tap to Pay on the iPhone, merchants can quickly start accepting contactless payments using just an iPhone, offering an excellent opportunity for people to start businesses of all sizes," said Luis Silva, founder and CEO of CloudWalk. "It's exciting to offer this technology in Brazil to our InfinitePay users. Our goal is to democratise access to the world's most innovative payment services and offer merchants the ability to accept payments quickly. The integration of Tap to Pay on the iPhone is an important step in this direction."
Tap to Pay on iPhone is available to participating payment platforms and their app developer partners for immediate use in their software development kits (SDKs). Find out more on the Apple Developer website.
